Blue River was not planned. It arrived.
Two horizontal fields divided by silence — a deep, almost nocturnal blue dissolving into pale sky above, and below, a churning surface of dark water broken by white — raw, restless, alive.
Liz Souza did not know what she was thinking when she made this work. That absence of intention is itself the meaning. The painting came from somewhere beneath conscious thought, which is precisely where the most honest things live.
This piece exists in quiet conversation with another work — a sister canvas in warm sunset tones of amber and orange, two faces of the same inner world. Not a diptych. Not a pair. Two independent truths that happen to share a soul.
